I love makeovers in movies, like when the unpopular (usually geeky with hidden beauty) girl has to change her look to achieve something, e,g, get the guy, go undercover as Miss America for police business or find out they’re actually a princess (only happens in Hollywood, unfortunately).
Here are my top 6:
Mia Thermopolis in Princess Diaries
Okay, so all the kid had to do was take off her glasses and straighten her hair and Mama Mia she automatically becomes a royal bombshell. If only it were that easy in real-life? Anne Hathaway did two makeover roles, I’m sure you all remember her stylish transformation in The Devil Wears Prada?
Lanie in She’s All That
This was one of my favourite movies as a teen. I had the biggest crush on Freddie Prinze Jnr. and thought Rachel Leigh Cook was as cute as a button. And again, all Lanie had to do was take off her glasses and change her hair and voila she’s a prom queen. Why don’t you try to turn Honey Boo Boo’s mom into prom queen, Hollywood? Now THAT would be a challenge.
Cady heron in Mean Girls
Before Lindsay Lohan turned to cocaine and reckless driving, she played Cady Heron in Mean Girls. Cady went from sweet and down-to-earth teenager to an absolute fetch mean girl. Yep, I just made fetch happen. Also, I’m from Africa and I know that no high school student in Africa would ever wear that pink shirt.
Gracie Hart in Miss Congeniality
I love Sandra Bullock. And I loved her character, Gracie Hart. Gracie Hart had to undergo the hardest transformation, because it wasn’t just about looking pretty, it was about becoming a real lady – one who has poise, knows how to style her hair and not leave any steak in her teeth. But in the end, you wanted to hug her, you wanted to kiss her, you thought she was gorgeous, so it was all worth it.
Sandy in grease
When Sandy, played by Olivia Newton John, went from ‘Golly, I love sunshine’ to leather clad ‘Tell me about it, stud’, it became movie makeover history and everyone got multiplying chills. It was a drastic makeover, she even had a cigarette in her mouth… don’t you know Danny Zuko isn’t going to like you more with smoky breath? Hopelessly devoted to smelling like an ashtray.
Josie Grosie in Never Been Kissed
With a nickname like Josie Grosie, you know you don’t have a lot going for you. But with inspiration from the most popular girls in school, you can go from nerdy undercover reporter to ‘even-my-hot-young-teacher-wants-to-hit-this’ kind of cute.
Some other favourites: Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, Emma Stone in House Bunny and Brittany Murphy in Clueless.
